Thousands Bulgarians Hail the Sunrise Hippy-Style on July Morning

Thousands young people gathered at Kamen Bryag village on the Black Sea coast, the traditional location for the hippy-style celebration of hailing the sunrise, known as July Morning.
The tradition dates back to the hippy period in the 1970s and 1980s and originated as a protest against the restrictions of the communist regime. Nowadays this meaning is lost but the sun worship as a symbol of a new beginning in life motivates young people to keep the tradition alive.

As the name suggests, the anthem of the celebrations is British rock band Uriah Heep's 1972 hit July Morning. This year July Morning was marked with a concert of Uriah Heep vocals John Walden and Bulgarian rock band BTR.

The tradition begs for associations with the sun worship of Peter Dunov followers, who hail the sunrise at the Hill of Prayers in the Rila mountian, which they consider to be a divine mystery.

Matonge Festival

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Matonge Festival (Fête du Quartier Matonge)

***** Location: Brussels, Belgium
***** Season: Mid-summer
***** Category: Observance

*****************************
Explanation

At the end of June every year, the Brussels area of Matongé (within the commune of Ixelles) takes an entire week-end to stage a huge street party. The through roads are blocked for the festivities, and people come from all over Brussels and beyond, to enjoy themselves. Brussels loves summer street festivals, but this is one of the biggest!

The Matongé is the African area of Brussels -- named after the elegant city centre street of Kinshasa (DR Congo). It started modestly with a few African shops and a hostel for African university students. Over the decades, it has grown in both size and attractiveness, and is now sought out by the Brussels Africans and non Africans alike for its relaxed, tropical atmosphere and the African music, groceries, restaurants, textiles and hair care provided by the many outlets. The Brussels Africans are well integrated into European society -- they are on the whole no poorer than the local Belgians, and some of them are quite wealthy, liking to flaunt it!

The Matongé is always an enjoyable area, but at festival time, it goes wild!

There is non-stop music up to (and beyond!) midnight for two days, there are cultural events in the many centres around the area, and there is lots of eating and drinking, with the numerous African restaurants of the quarter setting out their various foods. Although there is an increasing population of Anglophone Africans (mostly Nigerians and Ghanaians) now living in Brussels, the Matongé is Francophone, and the local specialities are most often from Congo, Senegal and other West African countries. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the party is for everyone, children and grown-ups alike.

The greatest joy for me, over the years, has been the mixing and blending that I observe. In 2007, most of the tables set out in the streets had mixed parties of African and European friends or family who had come to enjoy the party. A huge proportion of the children are mixed African and European, and a new coffee-coloured generation is growing up into beautiful young citizens.

One of the “must-see” sights of Brussels, certainly among the Top Ten on the Brussels sightseeing trips, is the Matongé mural named “Porte de Namur -- Porte de l’Amour” (Namur gate -- the gate of love). It can be found attached to a house near the old city gate of the road to Namur, and shows a leisurely scene depicting well-off Africa in Brussels -- with a show of flesh that would not be altogether typical!!

Europe Day

Europe Day - Europa-Tag

***** Location: European Union
***** Season: Early summer (9 May)
***** Category: Observance

*****************************
Explanation

Europe Day is a public holiday for European civil servants and other EU staff worldwide. But even those who do not get the day off, can join in the Europe Day celebrations and festivities in the European capitals and many other towns and cities.

Elsewhere around the world, there are Press articles, reports to commemorate the event, and the usual diplomatic receptions and celebrations to wish Europe well on its “national day”.

Even though the Treaty of Rome was signed on 25 March 1957 (50 years ago in 2007, a year of celebrations), the foundations were laid earlier, on 9 May 1950, when Robert Schuman made his famous speech (see below), which was soon followed by the creation of the first of the European Communities, that on Coal and Steel.

© PHOTO European Commission.

2007 is special for another reason as well -- Bulgaria and Romania joined the European family, and (it pleases the Irishwoman in me to say!) Irish finally became an official language of the European Union.

The week-end before Europe Day is a day of open doors to the European Institutions, and the public enjoy the information, the little gifts, the fun and the many multi-cultural activities laid on for them in the well-known buildings of Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg and the EU Delegations and Representations elsewhere. My haiku notebook dates back to Europe Day 2004!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

What is Europe Day?

On 9 May 1950 the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union.

In Paris that day, against the background of the threat of a Third World War engulfing the whole of Europe, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read to the international press a declaration calling France, Germany and other European countries to pool together their coal and steel production as "the first concrete foundation of a European federation".

What he proposed was the creation of a supranational European Institution, charged with the management of the coal and steel industry, the very sector which was, at that time, the basis of all military power. The countries which he called upon had almost destroyed each other in a dreadful conflict which had left after it a sense of material and moral desolation.

Everything, therefore, began that day. That is why during the Milan Summit of EU leaders in 1985 it was decided to celebrate 9 May as "Europe Day".

Every country which democratically chooses to accede to the European Union endorses its fundamental values of peace and solidarity.

These values find expression through economic and social development embracing environmental and regional dimensions which are the guarantees of a decent standard of living for all citizens.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Declaration of 9 May 1950

This is the first part of the proposal, which was presented by the French foreign minister Robert Schuman and which led to the creation of what is now the European Union :

World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it. The contribution which an organized and living Europe can bring to civilization is indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. In taking upon herself for more than 20 years the role of champion of a united Europe, France has always had as her essential aim the service of peace. A united Europe was not achieved and we had war.

Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity. The coming together of the nations of Europe requires the elimination of the age-old opposition of France and Germany. Any action taken must in the first place concern these two countries. With this aim in view, the French Government proposes that action be taken immediately on one limited but decisive point.

It proposes that Franco-German production of coal and steel as a whole be placed under a common High Authority, within the framework of an organization open to the participation of the other countries of Europe. The pooling of coal and steel production should immediately provide for the setting up of common foundations for economic development as a first step in the federation of Europe, and will change the destinies of those regions which have long been devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most constant victims.

The solidarity in production thus established will make it plain that any war between France and Germany becomes not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible. The setting up of this powerful productive unit, open to all countries willing to take part and bound ultimately to provide all the member countries with the basic elements of industrial production on the same terms, will lay a true foundation for their economic unification.

year's first pleasant dream
coming true before its end:
crossing the border!

Admittedly, this haiku needs some explanations.

In Japanese tradition the first dream one has during the year is going to influence the rest of the year. If it's a pleasant one, the year will be good. It was a practice even to sell one's auspicious dream for big money. Some legends even tell of people having their exact dream fulfilled.

In Romania this New Year's Day also meant our country joining the European Union. The first and most obvious consequence thereof was the supression of border control and of the humiliation of having to show a heap of papers and a lot of money (as a proof you had it, so they were just shown not given as a bribe) in order to be free to travel west. Thousands of people crossed the border to Hungary on foot, had a coffee in Hungary, then came back. Among them some elderly people who would never have had the money they were supposed to show...

Croatia is set to become the 28th member state of the European Union on 1 July 2013.

Croatia applied for EU membership in 2003 and the European Commission recommended making it an official candidate in early 2004. Candidate country status was granted to Croatia by the European Council in mid-2004. The entry negotiations, while originally set for March 2005, began in October that year together with the screening process. The accession process of Croatia was complicated by the insistence of Slovenia, an EU member state, that the two countries' border issues be dealt with prior to Croatia's accession to the EU.

Of course we can eat cheese at any time of the year, but some just taste better in a certain season.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Cheese is a solid food made from the milk of cows, goats, sheep and other mammals, by coagulating the milk. This is accomplished by first acidification with a bacterial culture and then employing an enzyme, rennet (or rennet substitutes) to coagulate the milk to "curds and whey."
The precise bacteria and processing of the curds play a role in defining the texture and flavor of most cheeses. Some cheeses also feature molds, either on the outer rind or throughout.

There are hundreds of types of cheese produced all over the world.

Feta is an aged crumbly cheese, commonly produced in blocks, and has a slightly grainy texture. It is used as a table cheese, as well as in salads (e.g the Greek salad), pastries and in baking, notably in the popular phyllo-based dishes spanakopita ("spinach pie") and tyropita ("cheese pie") and combined with olive oil and vegetables. It can also be served cooked or grilled, as part of a sandwich or as a salty alternative to other cheeses in a variety of dishes.

Why had I never yet included cheese in a haiku... ...
I love cheese, so it is not that!

It must be that I have never yet thought about cheese in the context of the seasons.

In Kenya, cheese is rather good, but varieties are few, and volume is low. Cheese is simply too expensive for the large majority of Kenyans... and if it became affordable, there would not be the volume of milk to make it, Kenya having by nature insufficient reliable rainfall.

In Europe though, it struck me that some types of cheese are kigo.

Take Raclette, a gorgeous Swiss cheese which comes to our shops in winter time. Some of my friends have special electric grill-type appliances, allowing a party of 6 or 8 people to melt slices of Raclette in tiny dishes also containing hot boiled potatoes, salami, mushrooms, ham and anything else one's heart could possibly desire. Raclette and a white wine make for an entertaining evening among friends, and the heat of the cheese plus the electric heater make one feel warm right through!

Cheese fondue (also using Raclette as one of its main ingredients) is another typical winter cheese dish (and one of my top favourites!).

Raclette virtually disappears from the shops during summer time.

Another winter cheese is the Italian Stracchino, a soft mellow cheese with a very short shelf life. It does not well survive the transport routes during summer, and the Italian market traders who are the best source for this cheese in Brussels, just do not stock it then.

I cannot right now think of any summer cheeses (all of them, of course!), but perhaps the equivalent is whipped cream, such a popular addition to summer fruit such as strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants, and again for the autumn apple and blackberry crumbles and pies.

Making my mouth water!

Gouda cheese ...
my stomach scribbles
its own haiku

Here in The Netherlands, we have wat we call 'oude kaas', or old cheese, verrrrry very ripe cheese, dark yellow in colour, with a sharp taste. Very yummy, definitely. However, the fat content is 48%, which is not good for your cholesterol, especially if you're middle-aged and older, so I seldom buy it these days.

Goat cheese is also gaining in popularity. Not too long ago, our Bettina Grand Crue won the international 'Grand Prix' goat cheese competition, and if you ever visit, I can even take you to the farm where it's produced.

In The Philippines, we have what we call 'kesong puti' or 'white cheese', which is made from carabao milk. A carabao is a water buffalo, the ones with the horns that help plow the rice fields. Memory tells me that that is (for me, at least) super yummy, and unfortunately unavailable in Europe.

Back here, we also have cheese from Edam and Alkmaar, and Leerdam, and recently a new kind from Beemster.

And then you have all the imported ones -- Camembert, Brie, Danish Blue, Feta, and so on.

And now, too, a sudden memory from childhood -- cheddar cheese, as introduced by the US, usually in thick slices and often processed with ham, among others. Very heavy on the stomach.

Somehow, though, I can't think of cheese in connection with kigo because, seasonal or not, they're usually available the whole year round.

Happy eating!

Gjetost (pronounced ‘yet-oast’)
is a unique brown cheese from Norway with a fudge-like texture and a sweet caramel flavour.

CLICK for more photos

It is made from a combination of milk, cream and whey which is slowly cooked until the naturally occurring sugars are caramelised, giving its distinctive colour and taste. The cheese is then cooled and set into blocks.
Gjetost was first made in the Gudbrandsdalen valley in Norway more than 130 years ago. Anne Hov, a farmer’s wife, was the first person to think of pouring cream into the kettle of whey. Her brown cheese got a higher price than her ordinary cheese and butter, and is reputed to have saved the valley from financial ruin in the 1880s.

Gjetost is best served in wafer thin slices and eaten on toast or Norwegian flatbread (very thin crackers). It is also makes a great addition to a cheese board or melted into a variety of food dishes.

Winter Solstice

***** Location: Ireland
***** Season: Mid-Winter
***** Category: Season

*****************************
Explanation

Each year, the main observance of the winter solstice in Ireland is to marvel at the spectacular pictures showing the light of the rising sun entering the megalithic passage tomb at Newgrange and illuminating the burial chamber. Archaeologists are convinced that this is the result of careful and deliberate planning at the construction of the tumulus.

Every year, a number of people chosen by a draw, as well as politicians and journalists, make the pilgrimage to Newgrange in order to witness the unique spectacle. For the rest of the population, the pleasure comes from the news reports and the stunning pictures published in the newspapers. Amazingly, almost every year has a clear sunrise on 21 December, and very few winter solstices are spoilt by clouds or rain at the long awaited moment.

Winter begins slow farewell after long night closes
(© Irish Times, 22 December 2006)

No light ever seems as bright or as sudden as that on a Solstice morning. This is the sun that rises after the longest night, writes Eileen Battersby (Irish Times, 22 December 2006).

A stream of golden sunlight passes through the window box and along the passageway leading into the burial chamber of Newgrange during yesterday’s winter Solstice on the shortest day of the year.
Photograph: The Irish Times

Long before daybreak, the signs were good. The heavens were casting off the Dickensian fog that had shrouded the Boyne Valley, and many other areas, during a 48-hour spell of damp, murky weather that made one suspect that time might be better spent re-reading Bleak House than waiting for the sun.

As the Newgrange watchers and Save Tara protesters gathered at the Stone Age monument, one of the finest passage tombs in Western Europe, knowing smiles set the tone.

After two dull mornings in which the Boyne itself had been invisible, the optimists had been rewarded.
A formidable trio consisting of nature, the ancients and global warming had decided on an impressive Christmas present - a golden sunrise.

Night suddenly became day and the monument and its resident battalion of sentry-like standing stones emerged from the purple darkness.

The air was cold but dry, perfect. Early arrivals noted the appearance of a handsome black Labrador. Too busy to notice the lone rabbit that froze statue-like before darting into a nearby hedge, Nick seemed businesslike, deliberate, impressively self-possessed. Two years of age, he is an experienced sniffer dog - his brief to check out the monument. Down the passageway he went, indifferent to the archaeology but intent on his task.

On leaving the monument, he walked down the hill, his Garda handler at his side and settled down with a sigh. Sharing the back of the van was his good-looking sidekick, Hesky, a German Shepherd, eager if far less a specialist.

"He does patrol work," said his handler. Nick sighed again. Trained by the British Metropolitan police, he is an ambitious character who needs a challenge.

The chosen few, those who had won Solstice tickets as well as the usual Government Ministers filed by on their way into the mound. The rest of us waited, aware the show had already begun. Beneath a brightening sky, the warm pink turned to yellow as a blister of orange on the horizon began to take shape. The tree-lined ridge across the valley seemed to shimmer. By 8.45am, the sun was poised to break free. No light ever seems as bright or as sudden as that on a Solstice morning. This is the sun that rises after the longest night.

A woman wearing a pair of balloons, began to sway and wave her arms at the sun. "Is she trying to levitate?" asked an onlooker. "I hope not," answered his companion, "but that one over there might set herself alight." Oblivious to those of us watching the sun, stood a forlorn acrobat with a hoola hoop.

A number of cups attached to it were blazing. Meanwhile by 8.51am, on cue, the sun was displaying an emphatic sense of purpose, and had broken free of the horizon. Within five minutes, it was well clear of the ridge and was casting a bright light over the valley. The river, which had been a swollen torrent, for day had become a silver ribbon.

Faces turned away from the sky to the quartz-faced monument. A great beam of yellow was pouring through the roof box. Cameras were held aloft as were mobile phones - all recording the moment. The light began to withdraw, its mission completed. Suddenly the party which had been inside the chamber, made its way out. As the first figures descended the steps, the sun moved behind the clouds. Nature and ancient man had said enough, winter had symbolically begun its slow farewell.

As a "veteran" I should describe what it looks and how it feels like, but it's beyond me. Let me just say it's far more than the Olympics. To have an average of 1 million young people walking down your streets is a challenge but also an experience any metropolis dweller wouldn't want to miss.

There's a first week where the participants (or WYD pilgrims) are hosted somewhere else in the organizing country and guests and hosts get to mutually know each other, their culture, traditions, piety etc.).

In the second week all converge toward the host city/region. It's not the "Catholic Woodstock" as sometimes dubbed by the tabloids, but a vibrant sharing of faith and joy (I should know; I've been inside). The young people have an opportunity to showcase whatever they have best in matters of faith-based art, social action etc. (Annual, "home" celebrations are similar, but more low-key and local in scope). Of course traditional Catholic devotions (Way of the Cross, Eucharistic adoration etc.) and the Mass with the Pope are a part. The final Mass
is preceded by a pilgrimage made on foot (and what an awesome sight it is).
But as I said, it's beyond my narrative abilities, really.

I should, however, conclude with a tribute to what I think is a quintessential element of the WYD: the Six-Pack.
The Six-Pack is a package containing the food ration for 6 WYD pilgrims. That's the standard. Now anybody who has any clue of how things look like during a WYD knows how unlikely it is for one to be able to stick together with other 5 people from the same group/nation. So you have to share: and it's not rare to see people from 5 continents bent over some canned tuna+sweet corn, on the same blanket. And you get to share so much more than that: insights, stories, joy...
I hear rumours that the catering for Sydney 2008 will give up the idea of Six-Packs. I hope not! Drop the Six-Packs and an essential part of the WYD spirit will be gone...

Dialogue to Challenge the Church

The Church has so much to talk about with youth, and youth have so much to share with the Church. This mutual dialogue should take place with great cordiality, clarity and courage.
(Pope John Paul II.)

“World Youth Day for All” will try to implement this dialogue!

Pope Holds Mass With One Million Pilgrims

Pope Benedict XVI sent a crowd of one million young pilgrims home happy from a gigantic open-air mass on Sunday, defying his reputation as a cold, distant pontiff who dislikes crowds.

The giant service at a former coal mine outside Cologne was the final major public appearance of Benedict's first foreign trip as pope, a trip which had been planned for Pope John Paul II.

Pilgrims from all over the world had spent the night at the site where the mass was held. Some 700,000 had attended a prayer-vigil with Benedict the night before, but the World Youth Day organizers said the numbers had swelled to "more than one million" by Sunday's mass.

Marienfeld

Small blue, sometimes pink to lavender colored flowers cover the ground everywhere now. It is one of the earliest Spring flowers around here. Like a proper weed, it covers the still empty flowerbeds, the roadside, the small path between the rice fields and the stone walls between the fields.

But the origin of this flower is Europe. Other sources place it as native to South Asia. It has been introduced to Japan in the early Meiji Period and soon taken its place in the local landscape. Sometimes it looks like a blue carpet on an empty field.

陰嚢, fuguri, means the scrotum, testicles. Literally this flower is named "testicles of a dog", but that has nothing to with the looks of it.
The small flowers have four petals and the color gets more intensive toward the outside.

.................................................................................

The Feast of the Epiphany takes place each year on the fixed date of 6 January in the Western churches, and later in the Orthodox churches. This means that it occurs in winter in the Northern hemisphere, in the hot dry season in East Africa and in summer in the Southern hemisphere.

The Epiphany is the day when the arrival of the Three Wise Men or Magi in Bethlehem to worship the Christ child is celebrated by Christians the world over. The three wise men are seen as having come from different countries -- so, symbolically, this event heralds the arrival of the Messiah for the entire world.

The Christmas crib in All Saints’ Church, Mullingar, Ireland

In Spanish speaking countries, this (rather than Christmas) is the day when gifts are exchanged -- as the three wise men also brought their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child.

The Epiphany spells the end of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” and, on the following day, Christmas trees are undecorated and removed from the house, and Christmas cribs are removed from the church until the following year. The (longer) Epiphany season continues in church until it ends on Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent.

Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas. It is often viewed as the last day of the Christmas season (the end of the 12 days of Christmas).

Also known as The Epiphany, Three Kings Day (Día de los Reyes) is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child. According to the Biblical story, the Three Kings – named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar – presented the Baby Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Traditionally in Mexico, Three Kings Day was the gift-giving time, rather than Christmas day. Just as it is common for children to leave cookies for Santa in the U.S., in some regions of Mexico, it was customary for children to leave their shoes out on the night of January 5, often filling them with hay for the camels, in hopes that the Three Kings would be generous. Mexican children would awake on January 6 to find their shoes filled with toys and gifts.

Also traditional in Mexico is for families to gather together and share the Rosca de Reyes. The Rosca de Reyes is a crown-shaped sweet bread decorated with pieces of orange and lime. It is filled with nuts, figs, and cherries. Hot chocolate is traditionally served with the Rosca de Reyes.

The Visit of the Wise Men
Matthew 2 : 1 - 12

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’

When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Epiphany means the showing of God to all nations.

The Magi follow a star. They are not deterred by the evil scheming of Herod; like many good people, they seem hardly to perceive his wickedness, but make good use of the information he offers. They bring gifts; the gold of Gaspar, the myrrh of Melchior, the frankincense of Balthasar. And in the Christian tradition, they symbolise all nations, and every race.

There were three kings, and O what a sight!
One was yellow, and one was white,
and one was black as Epiphany night
on Christmas Day in the morning

In the Philippines which has the longest days of celebrating Christmas, from the middle of December to January 6, any godchild who fails to receive his Christmas gift from his godfather for some reason or another, has January 6 (Three Kings Day) as the last day where he can visit his godparents and still get a Christmas present

Traditions of the Epiphany

Christianity celebrates the Magi on the day of Epiphany, January 6, the last of the twelve days of Christmas, particularly in the Spanish-speaking parts of the world.

In these Spanish-speaking areas, the three kings (Sp. "los Reyes Magos de Oriente", also "Los Tres Reyes Magos"), receive wish letters from children and magically bring them gifts on the night before Epiphany. According to the tradition, the Magi come from the Orient on their camels to visit the houses of all the children; much like the Northern European Santa Claus with his reindeer, they visit everyone in one night. In some areas, children prepare a drink for each of the Magi, it is also traditional to prepare food and drink for the camels, because this is the only night of the year when they eat.

Spanish cities organize cabalgatas in the evening, in which the kings and their servants parade and throw sweets to the children (and parents) in attendance. The cavalcade of the three kings in Alcoi claims to be the oldest in the world; the participants who portray the kings and pages walk through the crowd, giving presents to the children directly.

In France and Belgium, the holiday is celebrated with a special tradition: within a family, a cake is baked which contains one single bean. Whoever gets the bean is "crowned" king for the remainder of the holiday.

This tradition also exists in Spain, but with one small variant; the cake, in this case actually a ring-shaped pastry or Roscón de Reyes, is most commonly bought, not baked, and it contains a small figurine of a Magus and a dry broad bean. The one who gets the figurine is crowned, but whoever gets the bean has to pay the value of the cake to the person that originally bought it.

A tradition in some Polish (Slavic) homes involves writing the initials of the three kings above the main door of the home to confer blessings on the occupants for the New Year. For example, K + M + B 2007.*

Puerto Rico

Día de Reyes : If you are Puerto Rican then you have to celebrate Los Reyes. After Christmas put a Reyes statue as a centerpiece on your dinning room table so the kids know - it's no over yet "faltan los Reyes."

Celebrate it Puerto Rican style, that is.... have the kids cut grass or greenery on January 5th and put it in a box under their bed.

http://www.elboricua.com/images/PRKids_grassforCamels.jpg

Put a small gift from Los Reyes in the box once they fall asleep - and don't forget to throw out the grass. Have a special and festive Día de Reyes meal that day. Take pictures of your children with their boxes. After dinner make it a tradition to sing a Reyes song.

Los Reyes arrive before dawn on January 6th. For centuries Puerto Rican children have celebrated Los Reyes in the same manner as their grandparents did when they were children. January 6 is called Epiphany and is traditionally the day in which the Magi arrived bearing gifts for the Christ child. Even to this day in Hispanic countries throughout the world, January 6 is the day that children receive their Christmas gifts, in commemoration of the Magi's visit.

Mexico

Dia de Reyes (Epiphany) : Each year, this Mexican Christmas tradition continues. The children gather at the Alameda Central Park in Mexico City to visit the Three Magi (The Three Kings) and hand-deliver letters with their wishes and gifts in the tradition of the Three Wise Men who came from the East, following the star of Bethlehem, and presenting the Christ Child with gold, incense and myrrh.

The traditional Epiphany supper of ring-shaped cake with hot chocolate originated in Spain and made its way to Mexico. The cake is decorated with sugar and dried fruit. A small figure, representing the Christ Child, is hidden inside the cake. The century old tradition states that whoever finds the "Child" is spiritually obliged to present the figure at the nearest church on February 2nd and offer a tamale-party in his honor.

Italy

La Befana is a character in Italian folklore, similar to Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus. The character may have originated in Rome, then spread as a tradition to peninsular Italy.

Her name derives from the festival of Epiphany, and she visits all the children of Italy on the night of 6 January to fill their socks with candy if they are good or a lump of coal if they are bad. Being a good housekeeper, many say she will sweep the floor before she leaves. The child's family typically leaves a small glass of wine and a plate with a few morsels of food, often regional or local, for Befana.

She is usually portrayed as an old lady riding a broomstick through the air wearing a black shawl and is covered in soot because she enters the childrens houses through the chimney. Unlike a witch though, she is often smiling and she has a bag or a hamper filled with candy and/or gifts.

Legend has it that La Befana was approached by the Astrologers some days before Christ's birth. They asked for directions to where the Christ Child was, but she did not know. She provided them with shelter for a night, as she was considered the best housekeeper in the village with the most pleasant home. They invited her to join them on the journey to find the Christ Child, but she declined, stating she was too busy with her housework. Later, Befana had a change of heart, and tried to search out for the Astrologers and the Christ child. That night she was not able to find them, so to this day, La Befana is searching for the Christ child. She leaves all the good children toys and candy, while the bad children get coal; for she never knows who might be Jesus!

Traditionally, all Italian children may expect to find a lump of "coal" in their stockings (actually rock candy made black with caramel coloring), as every child has been at least occasionally bad during the preceding year.

In the center of Rome, in Piazza Navona, a popular Market, the Fiera della Befana takes place each year between Christmas and the Epiphany. There toys, sugar charcoal and candies are sold for the Roman children.

The feast of la Befana in Rome has been immortalized in four famous sonetti in roman dialect by the nineteenth century roman poet Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli.

There is a poem about La Befana, which is well-known throughout Italy. Here it is:

La Befana vien di notte
Con le scarpe
Tutte rotte
Vien vestita
Alla romana
Viva, Viva La Befana!

Trinidad and Tobago

Overlap : In the first month of the global calendar year, those of the Christian ethic will observe the Christmas season up until January 6th, for Christians the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

Meanwhile, Carnival loving Trinis (nationals of Trinidad and Tobago), are already selecting their costumes to masquerade on the streets, and calypso and soca singers are airing their music on the radios,TV, and in the fetes (Carnival parties).

On 19th and 20th Feburary 2007, Trinis will celebrate the annual street festival of carnival (some call it the world’s greatest show).

Storms and gales, winter storms

***** Location: Ireland, other Atlantic countries of Europe

***** Season: late autumn / early winter
***** Category: Heaven

*****************************

Explanation

In Ireland, storms, gales and hurricanes are a regular phenomenon of late autumn and winter. These are often the tail ends of the American ones, having crossed the Atlantic and regained force -- more recently, they seem to be increasing in frequency and strength, probably a sign of global warming.

Such strong winds in Ireland leave in their wake trees bent, broken and destroyed, flooding, impassable roads, major power failures, telephone cuts and costly damage to houses and farm buildings. Many commercial woodlands are criss-crossed with trees that failed to fall all the way in a hurricane, as they were held up by their neighbours. Such trees often adapt to their new positions and send new shoots upwards.

The storms are particularly strong in the Atlantic countries of Europe, where the North American hurricanes, after crossing the Atlantic, make first landfall and strike with all their force. Ireland, being most exposed, is hardest hit, but Britain also suffers at times, as do the Atlantic regions of France.

Heavy rain and high winds batter Ireland
31/12/2006

Heavy rain and extreme winds have wreaked havoc across the country today, with gales of over 120km/h (75mph) reported in some places.

The west and north of the country have borne the brunt of the squally showers and heavy rains.
Galway city and county was battered by a thunderstorm this afternoon, while coastal regions are being pounded by high swells and strong winds.

Some 20,000 people are without electricity today after high winds brought down power lines.
The ESB said the worst affected areas are in Cavan, Longford, Monaghan and parts of the Midlands.

Motorists have been advised not to travel unless strictly necessary. The Dublin Port Tunnel is closed due to an apparent electrical fault and Stena Line and Irish Ferries sailings were cancelled earlier today due to the adverse weather.

Tonight's planned New Year's Eve party at Belfast City Hall has also been called off due to worries over safety after high winds were forecast. Up to 10,000 people had been expected to line the streets outside City Hall to see stars including Tony Christie, soul singer Beverley Knight and rock band The Thrills.

Met Éireann said the winds will ease this evening, although tonight will stay cold and windy, with clear spells and scattered heavy showers, with some hail or thunder possible.

New Year's Day is expected to turn cold with sunshine and showers. Some of the showers will be heavy and possibly thundery. Sleet or snow is possible over high ground.

The next storm was only a few days away :

Storm causes power outages, disrupts travel
Mark Rodden and Alexandra Cochrane

Transport and other services were seriously disrupted yesterday as a result of stormy overnight conditions that continued into the morning.

Air and ferry services were curtailed, while thousands of Bank of Ireland customers were deprived of ATM and other card facilities due to power cuts caused by the bad weather.

Met Éireann reported gusts of 140km/h (87mph) at Malin Head, Donegal, yesterday morning and a number of homes in the county were left without power for a time as the winds hampered repair work.

Dublin airport reported that domestic flights using small aircraft were worst affected by the weather. Aer Arann cancelled 14 flights at Galway, Cork, Dublin, Donegal and Kerry airports. Flights were running on schedule in the afternoon.

Conditions also forced Ryanair to cancel two flights to Bristol and Glasgow in the morning, with passengers being accommodated on later flights. Aer Lingus cancelled one flight to Heathrow after the weather also caused delays to their services. Passengers were accommodated later.

Irish Ferries's 9.30am Rosslare-Pembroke service was cancelled, which meant that there was no afternoon return journey.

Stena Line sailings on the Dublin to Holyhead route were cancelled, as were services from Rosslare to Fishguard. Services from Rosslare and Dublin Port were expected to resume yesterday evening.

In the North, more than 1,500 homes were left without electricity after gale force winds brought down power lines. Enniskillen, Omagh and Coleraine were the worst affected areas.

Bank of Ireland said the disruption to its services was down to a "serious ESB power outage" early yesterday that affected its systems. The outage hit the company's computer centre at Cabinteely in Dublin from about 6.30am yesterday, causing problems to its entire network and affecting branch, ATM and other card facilities.
